I remember being 13. Back then I wasn't allowed to watch MTV (or The Simpsons, or In Living Color, or anything, really). But I was a tricky motherfucker. I knew that if I held down two buttons on my analog cable box, I could get squiggly, distorted reception of Playboy. I knew that my friends video recorded The Simpsons and I could watch it in secrecy at their houses.
I would tape record MTV.
That's right. I would set up a tape recorder next to the TV in my room, hit record, and go distract my parents with conversation. I would return an hour later, a cassette full of contraband music videos in audio only. If only I knew that, 13 years later, today's kids would have it so much easier.
But now I can have my revenge. MTV has launched their newest website MTVMusic. Here you will find EVERY video that MTV has ever played, and is currently playing. Michael Jackson. Pearl Jam. Nirvana. Blind Melon. Nine Inch Nails. And you can watch, share, link, etc.
For example, here's one of my favorite MJ videos - Leave Me Alone. I remember being 13 and lying on my bedroom floor, my train tracks wrapped around me, trying to replicate the giant MJ who violently frees himself from the roller coaster shackling him to the carnival floor.
Never saw it?
It's right here.
