Re: David's last post.Don't you just ADORE Missed Connections? It is such a sickeningly addictive and odd entity. For one - I wonder WHO, if ANYONE ever finds their missed connection. Does anyone have a story they heard of true love (or lust... or bathroom camaraderie) that came as a result of a Missed Connection?
For one, there is a large group of people who go onto Missed Connections to create phony ads, which very well may be what you've stumbled upon here. The most ridiculous ones, you can assume, are probably created in jest.
So we have the jokesters. But I know, for instance, that I've never met eyes with a lad, or grabbed a random fellow, lost them in a crowd, and then spent the next day on MC, praying that someone would post a message for "the hot guy with spiky hair and the Calvin Klein winter jacket."
It makes me wonder, how many of us are Missed Connections that just never bothered to see if we were?
Missed Connections is really like playing the lottery (except it is free). You're taking a needle's chance in hell, putting your heart on the line and praying that the random man you found will notice you saw him, think of Craig's List, and make it there in enough time before your message is cycled to the bottom of the page.
Plus, how many people do you think respond to Missed Connections when they are not, in actuality, those Missed Connections? This could be problematic, and remain unresolved until you meet, and by that point they may have drugged you, raped you, cut you into a million pieces, and dropped a garbage bag full of you into the East River.
Plus, assuming there WERE successful Missed Connections... do they admit it?
"Oh, you and Bruce are so cute together! Where did you meet?"
"Well, we both ate some day-old Chicken Satay at a new restaurant, and get this..."
Dangerous. Entertaining. Exciting!
We need to market Missed Connections, I think. Come up with a tagline. Or we can just steal the New York Lotto's "Hey, You Never Know!"
I actually have a friend who legitimately met someone on Missed Connections. They were checking each other out at different tables at a restaurant (I was there!) and the next day this boy posted a Missed Connection, and my friend saw it. They "dated" for a bit, and still have a (bizarre, undefined) relationship. Whenever we talk about that boy, we call him Missed Connections.
ReplyDeleteHELLO DAVID!
ReplyDeleteTHAT BOY IS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldn't say that it we are bizarre and undefined :)
It was the one and only missed connections I have ever posted and it actually worked! No joke. And yes, I know that my nickname is "missed connections"
Goodness. What a small, small world.
ReplyDelete1. Hi!
ReplyDelete2. Seriously - what a small world.
3. Ok then, quick - define it ;)
4. Said friend might be reading this right now, and if so he's ready to kill me for making his "worlds collide". Ha.
I'm dying!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like to use the generic "through mutual friends." Nobody tends to ask questions beyond that.
i posted a missed connection once (i was rebounding, low point in life, blah blah blah), and despite the fact that the boy was from florida and was only VISITING my city, he actually did see the MC i posted, thanks to a friend here.
ReplyDeleteso he replied, and it turned out he was transferring to a law school near here.
we didn't fall in love, but we became friends, and he's a lovely person.
