I haven't seen a play or musical since American Buffalo a few weeks ago. That's like eating rotten Chinese food and then sitting there with a taste of bad kung pao in your teeth for a month.Luckily, my theatrical drought is ending in a few days.
On Friday night I will be seeing Shrek from the second row of the mezzanine, and I couldn't be more excited.
Sure Ben Brantley wasn't the kindest in his review, but there are many things going for Shrek that have me almost completely sure I will adore it:
1. Jeanine Tesori has written the music. She's responsible for my second favorite musical of all time - Violet. As well as Thorougly Modern Millie and Caroline, or Change.
2. Spectacle! I love big flashy sets and costumes. Special effects and puppets. Seriously, story means nothing if you tap into the little kid in me with plenty of magic and amazement (see: Disney's Tarzan... they walked on the back wall of the stage!)
3. Sutton Foster! This girl can shine shit to gold no matter what time of day it is. I loved her in Young Frankenstein while simultaneously hating Young Frankenstein.
And that's more than enough, I think.
Oh! And here's Sutton Foster and the Shrek girls singing the showstopper "I Know It's Today" on the Today show (I'm surprised they didn't use any word play on that one... oh well).

Ugh, I'm so jealous. I was dying to see this when I was in NY, despite some of the criticisms I've heard from friends who got to see a preview show.
ReplyDeleteI'm as green as she is with jealousy...my ONLY qualm is....good bowler?
