One of my favorite aspects about the At Hand production of LILA CANTE is Rebecca Hart, who plays Molly the musician. When you have an actor playing a musician, it helps if that person is (at the very least) familiar with handling his/her instrument and/or voice; Rebecca is a honest-to-God, true-blue rock singer chick. I love this about her - and the effortless way she is able inhabit that particular aspect of her character. Wait until you see how she plays in the show, Justin! It's both truthful and moving. Musicians and their instruments have always fascinated me (like many a groupie!).There's an in-synch quality to their demeanor, and a focus that's bigger than we can comprehend. I've been watching and studying Rebecca with her guitar for almost a year now; I still have no idea quite how she creates the vitality and verve in her music, even when she is playing right in front of me. She's like the love child of Joan Jett and Lenny Kaye.
Rebecca and her band, the Sexy Children, released a live EP earlier this year recorded at Joe's Pub - there's a track on it called "Last Dance" which will make my Top 10 Songs of 2009 List for sure. You can find out more about Rebecca at www.rebeccahart.net, naturally.
But most important - she and her band are performing a gig TONIGHT (Tuesday, October 6) at 8pm at the lovely Rockwood Music Hall on Allen Street in New York City:
The gig is subtitled IN MEMORIUM: LILA CANTE, and will be a tribute to our fallen idol in the play. I will finally get to stand on a rock stage in the East Village with a band behind me - to deliver a eulogy to our girl Lila. Come see this side of our show - there are bound to be tons of surprises!!!!
